Palm acid oil (PAO) is a by-product obtained from the alkaline refining of palm oil. It is used for making laundry soaps and for producing calcium soaps for animal feed formulations.
Acid oil, which is a by-product in vegetable oil refining, mainly contains free fatty acids (FFAs) and acylglycerols, and is a candidate of materials for production of biodiesel fuel.
It has been acknowledged as a suitable feedstock for biofuels in the EU Renewable Energy Directive II (RED II). EU biodiesel mandates are rising, and POME looks set to become an increasingly important feedstock.
